Distal Biceps Tendon Tears

These tears are rare, usually affecting men over the age of thirty, caused by heavy lifting including weightlifting or a sudden forceful contraction of the biceps muscle. Preexisting degenerative or inflammatory changes in the distal biceps tendon may precede a distal biceps tendon rupture.

Symptoms include a popping sensation at the front of the elbow, pain, swelling and bruising, and weakness in performing palm up movements.  Symptoms often improve but sometimes the muscle can bunch up toward the shoulder which is a good indication of a complete rupture. The elbow often continues to work with the help of other muscles but weakness when flexing the elbow and twisting the forearm can occur.
